Augmented Reality + 3D = virtual tour guides on iPhone and Android

Metaio’s tech allows people to tag places in the real world with tweets, photos or animations of 3D sprites through using their mobile camera.

The augmented reality app will also be integrated with Facebook to let you geotag photos and notes that way too.

The firm told Venture Beat that the application will work with the iPhone 3GS (once augmented reality is allowed with iPhone OS 3.1), Google Android, Nokia’s Symbian browser and Windows Mobile.

There’s no news on a release date for the technology yet but the implications of Metaio’s combination of 3D tech and augmented reality are really exciting.

Expect to see 3D tour guides popping up in cities very soon and location based gaming getting really big
